The National Association
of Senior Health Professionals to Serve as a Member of the Health
Promotion/Disease Prevention Network Organized by the American
Society on Aging and the Roybal Institute of Applied Gerontology
Each year brings about proof of new and
effective strategies to promote health and further prevent disease
and morbidity. One way to ensure that this developing knowledge
is applied effectively is to organize it into a systematic program
or model of HP/DP strategies that is replicable across a variety
of settings and providers.
The American Society on Aging and the
Roybal Institute of Applied Gerontology at California State University
have received funding from the Centers for Disease Control to
develop such a model. The model will facilitate the conduct of
outreach, dissemination of information, service delivery, staff
training and a better understanding of the changing health and
social service needs of an aging and more diverse population by
organizations whose mission is to promote and improve the public's
health.
The model will also incorporate interchangeable
components suitable for a wide range of health and functional
issues affecting older adults. In addition to disease specific
messages, the model will address consortium-building, use of the
media, culturally sensitive approaches, and effective strategies
for working with older adults and the aging network.
